Alternative Futures
This hands-on strategic session is designed to provide analysts and decision makers with insights and methods to help them to better cope with uncertainty and complexity and think about the future. A key element will be the discussion of methods for overcoming bias and other challenges associated with thinking about the future, including scenario planning, red teaming, and wargaming.

Tate Nurkin
Tate Nurkin is a distinguished nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Forward Defense and Indo-Pacific Security Initiative. With over twelve years of expertise at Jane’s by IHS Markit, including as Executive Director of the Strategic Assessments and Futures Studies Center, he focuses on US-China competition, defense technology, and global defense industry analysis. Tate’s accolades as an author and speaker shine through his contributions to influential publications and prestigious testimonies. He holds a master’s degree in international affairs from Georgia Tech and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Duke University, currently residing in Charlotte, NC.
Hsiao-pin Yu (Yuster),
Yuster Yu, an accomplished professional, has held significant roles throughout his career. As a Cyber Security Senior Advisor, he provided strategic insights and integrated intelligence operations. Additionally, Yuster successfully managed his self-owned cyber-security research and analysis company, Pacific Research Services, LLC. His versatile expertise extends to systems integration as the Partner and CEO of Ensemble Integrated Services, LLC, and as Vice President and COO of Jupiter Integrated Services.
Arnaud Sobero
Arnaud Sobrero is a seasoned expert in Aerospace, Defense, and Security with over 12 years of international experience. He has excelled in sales, marketing, and strategy roles at prestigious organizations, showcased exceptional analytical skills, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Cyber Security at King’s College London.
Philip Salisbury
Bringing over 25 years of experience in the Energy, Oil and Gas industry. His career has spanned numerous leadership appointments throughout Europe, Americas and Asia Pacific. Formally with BP where he held positions in London, Aberdeen, Cleveland USA, and latterly leading teams based in Tokyo and Beijing. Philip was Vice President, IHS Markit, based in Singapore where he headed development and management of IHS Energy and IHS Energy Insight teams. Prior to the merger of IHS and CERA in 2004, Philip led CERA’s Energy team in Asia Pacific.
Kent Babin
Kent brings over 10 year of experience in Crypto, blockchain and Fintech. Kent’s career in technology and communications has spanned numerous appointments in Mongolia, India, Egypt, Azerbaijan, and Singapore. Starting out as a project manager of software development projects for AIESEC, he eventually became the Chief Technology Officer of GoldenPay, Azerbaijan’s first online payment services provider.
Dzirhan Mahadzir
Dzirhan Mahadzir, an accomplished freelance defense journalist and analyst based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, he has guest lectured at the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College from 1999 to 2003, covering various subjects on strategy and military history.
